LTM are proud to announce the first ever CD from Factory dance trailblazers Quando Quango, the seminal 80’s electronic dance combo helmed by Hillegonda ‘Gonnie’ Rietveld and Mike Pickering.

Formed in 1981 in Rotterdam, the duo relocated to Manchester in 1983 and went on to release four cult singles and an album for Factory Records, Pigs and Battleships (1985). As well as the full album, the extended CD version includes the singles Love Tempo, Atom Rock, Tingle and Genius - the latter welcomed again in 2000 after appearing on Andrew Weatherall’s celebrated 9 O’Clock Drop compilation.

Pigs and Battleships was mixed in New York by legendary house producer Mark Kamins, who also helmed the mixes of Love Tempo and Atom Rock included among the bonus tracks. Associate members included percussionist Simon Topping (ex ACR), bassist Barry Johnson (ex-Sweet Sensation, later Aswad) and Reinier Rietveld (Spasmodique). Guest musicians include singer Beverley MacDonald (52nd Street), pianist Andy Connell (ACR, Swing Out Sister) as well as guitarists Vini Reilly and Johnny Marr. Way ahead of their time, Quando Quango offered a cosmopolitan dance concept which covered all points (and beats) between soul, funk, electro, reggae and the Slits. Better appreciated in the States at the time (Love Tempo hit number 4 in the Billboard dance chart), their vision should now be clear to one and all.

The original mixes of Love Tempo and Atom Rock are also featured on the acclaimed LTM compilation Cool As Ice: The Be Music Productions.

Mike went on to become one of the best-known DJs at the legendary Hacienda club in Manchester, before forming the chart conquering group M People. After gaining her Doctorate with a study of house music culture, Hillegonda publishes academically in this field, such as her book This Is Our House. She occasionally DJs and is currently Senior Lecturer at a London university.

The album has been digitally remastered from the original tapes and runs for 74 minutes. The booklet includes sleevenotes by Dr Hillegonda Rietveld.
